Unfortunately there is a downside to getting your hair coloured or styled regularly. When the hair is exposed to a damaging environment it can cause dry and brittle hair to break off, however, there are ways to prevent breakage. Follow these 5 tips to restore the healthiness of your hair.

Reduce heat

Heat is used to style the hair through blow drying, curling or straightening. Any form of heat will be damaging and we recommended to stop using heat all together, but this is unrealistic. If you canโ€™t stop using heat here are some healthier ways to reduce your heat usage.

Avoid using heat daily, instead style the hair once or twice a week or preferably only on special occasions. During the week, consider embracing your natural hair and letting it loose.

Stop blow drying the hair, instead let your hair air dry naturally. Just allow plenty of time (1-2 hours) to let the hair dry before leaving the house. A tip is to wash your hair at night, so it is dry and ready for the next morning, but please be sure it is dry before heading to bed as you will experience more breakage when moving around while you sleep.

When it is absolutely necessary and you need to use heat on your hair, consider investing in a good heat protectant. This should be applied to the hair prior to any styling, and will work to prevent most of the damage from heat.

Invest in restorative products

Hair masks, deep conditioners and hair oils all contain restorative properties and will work wonders to prevent your hair from breakage.

Hair masks are applied to the hair and left on for an extended period of time to penetrate the hair strands, leaving them silky soft and smooth. A product recommendation is Olaplex no.3 which will strengthen and repair the hairs broken bonds.

Deep conditioners are used in the shower alongside your normal shampoo and conditioner. They are usually thicker in consistency than your regular conditioner and washed out the same way. However, as the name suggests, they will work their magic deep into the hair follicle, with the result being silky soft.

Hair oils are applied to the hair after the shower once it has been towel dried. These oils range from macadamia, moroccan, jojoba, coconut, argan and many more. Each oil will penetrate the hair slightly differently as well as bring a different scent, however, each oil is just as beneficial as the other, so itโ€™s up to you which one you choose!

Use a good quality shampoo and conditioner

Shampoo and conditioner is one of those beauty products that is often disregarded as important. Due to the quick life of the product, people often opt for the cheaper option as the products only last a couple months.

It is crucial to find a good shampoo and conditioner that works for you and your hair type, and not the cheap bottles you buy at your local Coles or Woolworths.

Professional salon grade shampoo and conditioner will be stronger and more concentrated. These products will actually improve the condition of your hair, not just clean it. This also means you will use less product and therefore it will last longer. ย

Reduce weekly washes

Hair isnโ€™t meant to be washed everyday. In fact, it is important that you actually leave the hair for several days without washing so that the natural oils produced by your scalp can travel down the hair shaft and naturally penetrate the hair.

If you want to prolong the freshness of your hair in between washes consider purchasing a good dry shampoo. This will add powder to the scalp, soaking up the oils, leaving the hair fresher and smelling good. We love and recommend Moroccanoil, it also comes in colours suited to both blondes and brunettes.

Please also note that when it does come time to wash your hair avoid tying it up or harshly brushing it, as your hair is the most fragile when wet. Instead, let it air dry, and if your hair is still wet, only use a tangle brush or wide tooth comb.

Think silk

Silk pillowcases seem luxurious but they do wonders for your hair when trying to prevent breakage. The result; your hair will be visibly smoother and shinier, improving the texture and look for your hair. Definitely an investment, as these pillowcases range from $50-$100, but you will be thanking yourself in the long term.

Similarly, rather than tight, rubbery hair ties which create damage, consider buying silky soft scrunchies that glide over the hair. Anything that is too tight will cause unnecessary breakage and should be avoided if possible. Unlike silk pillowcases, you can purchase silk scrunchies for only $2-$10, so make the switch today.

Get regular trims

Most people want to keep their hair as long as possible but it is crucial to get your hair trimmed regularly. This will remove any split ends, and prevent breakage before it even occurs.

It is recommended to trim the hair every 4 to 6 weeks to maintain shorter hair styles and 8 to 10 weeks to keep long hair nice and healthy, even when growing it. It is a myth that regular trims will make your hair grow faster, but it will improve the general healthiness and shine of your natural hair, which will inevitably help its growth in the long term.
